Shower Goes Hot, Then Cold? Here’s What to Check First

4 min readBirmingham
The short answer

Consistent shower temperatures rely on a balance between your boiler's output and your shower valve's ability to react to pressure changes.

A comfortable shower suddenly turns cold — or too hot. Before blaming the boiler, compare what happens at the shower and the basin. These observations can help a plumber investigate homes in Rubery, Rednal and Frankley.

At a glance

Three things to know.

  • Compare shower and basin behaviour without standing under the spray.
  • Follow the shower manual when cleaning the head.
  • Stop using a shower that produces unexpected hot surges.
01

The Combi Boiler 'Tug-of-War'

With a combi boiler, hot water is produced on demand and available flow is shared between outlets. If a shower changes temperature when another tap opens, simultaneous demand or changes in supply pressure may be involved. That does not establish a boiler fault.

A thermostatic mixer also needs suitable hot and cold supplies. The correct flow, pressure and temperature requirements come from the shower instructions. Do not deliberately test sudden temperature changes while someone is standing under the spray.

02

Faulty Thermostatic Cartridges

The thermostatic cartridge regulates the mix of hot and cold water. Debris, wear or restricted supplies can affect its performance, but temperature swings alone do not prove the cartridge needs replacement.

Tell the plumber whether this is a new problem, whether the shower is a mixer or electric model, and whether it happens with other outlets off. Electric showers have different checks and must not be opened by a homeowner.

03

Safe checks for the homeowner

Before calling an engineer, try these simple diagnostics:

  • From a safe position, compare the basin hot tap with the shower; avoid touching water that may be scalding.
  • Check the visible hose for kinks.
  • Clean the shower head only as its manufacturer recommends; unsuitable descaling products can damage finishes.
04

Temperature safety comes before diagnosis

If water becomes unexpectedly hot, stop using the shower until it has been checked, particularly where children or anyone with reduced sensation uses it. Do not override a temperature stop or adjust concealed controls.

Thermostatic protection depends on the product and its correct installation and maintenance. A cold shower is not proof of a failed safety device, and a thermostat is not a substitute for checking temperature before use.

05

When to call a plumber

Opening a shower valve to replace a cartridge requires isolating the water supply and can be tricky if the retaining nuts are seized. If your diagnostics point to a cartridge failure, or if you suspect your boiler is the cause, professional help is required.

Never attempt to adjust the gas settings on your boiler or dismantle the internal parts of a gas appliance; this is strictly work for a Gas Safe registered engineer.
