Carbon Monoxide: The Warning You Can’t Smell

5 min readWalsall
The short answer

If you suspect carbon monoxide, leave the property and call 0800 111 999 from outside. Seek urgent medical help if anyone feels unwell.

There’s no smell to warn you. That makes a working alarm and knowing what to do essential. Here’s the practical safety checklist for Darlaston, Brownhills and Pelsall households.

At a glance

Three things to know.

  • Follow the alarm manufacturer’s positioning and testing guidance
  • Leave the property if an alarm sounds or you suspect exposure
  • Know the emergency number for gas leaks: 0800 111 999
01

Signs to watch for

  • Headaches, dizziness, nausea or tiredness that ease when you leave the house.
  • A lazy yellow or orange flame on a gas hob or fire instead of crisp blue.
  • Soot or brown staining around appliances or flues.
  • Pilot lights that keep going out.
  • Excess condensation on windows near an appliance.
02

Where to fit alarms

Fit an audible CO alarm in any room with a fuel-burning appliance, and ideally in bedrooms. Follow the manufacturer's positioning guidance and test it monthly.

03

If you suspect a leak

Open doors and windows, turn off appliances if safe, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Seek medical advice if anyone feels unwell. Do not use the appliance again until a Gas Safe registered engineer has checked it.

For appliance-specific steps, follow your boiler or product manual. Work inside a gas boiler must be left to a Gas Safe registered engineer.
